Motorola's MOTOFONE

Motorola's MOTOFONE: "The Motorola PR guys are working overtime today announcing yet another phone. The MOTOFONE is a slim, 9mm-thick phone that looks like the SLVR but thinner. Its display uses Electrophoretic Display (EPD) technology to make the screen more visible in sunlight.

Motorola also says there's a redesigned UI that's based more on icons than text, which is good, because we never liked Motorola's UI anyhow. Other than these slim details, the only other thing announced in the press release is that prepaid customers will get an update of how many minutes/messages are left after they make a call or send a message. The phone will be available sometime in the latter half of '06.

White Pearl Cellphone: Affordable Pseudo-Luxury

White Pearl Cellphone: Affordable Pseudo-Luxury: "Who could forget the Black Diamond cellphone from last March, only to be reborn as the Windows Mobile Black Diamond a few days ago? More importantly, who can forget the steep $300,000 price tag? Well, the Black Diamond's designer has gone back to the drawing boards and come up with the more affordable White Pearl. Priced at the slightly more sane $1,500, the White Pearl looks suspiciously similar to the Black Diamond, only not made of dark matter.

The White Pearl will actually go into production and will feature, among other things, Wi-Fi, a 2-inch touch screen and a four-megapixel camera. It'll run on Windows Mobile 5 with a 400MHz Intel processor.

Motorola RAZR MAXX V6: Noteworthy For Its Fast Data, and Extras

Motorola RAZR MAXX V6: Noteworthy For Its Fast Data, and Extras: "This RAZR lookalike isn't a RAZR. It's a MAXX — just think of it as a hot dog, with all the extras. First and foremost, it has 3.5G HSDPA connection. That's good for 400 to 700 kbps transfers, with 1 megabit bursts, on Cingular's network (if the phone is ever picked up by the carrier.) Then there's a 2-megapixel phone for snapshots, and a VGA camera for video conferencing. On the outside, there are light up play/pause, track forward and back buttons, for playing MP3s off the internal 50MB of memory (expandable by a MicroSD slot.) Annnd, there's a QVGA screen with a 120 by 160 screen on the flipside. I think that does it...oh, wait: It's not much larger than a regular RAZR, at about 53 by 104 by 15mm. More photos after the jump.– Brian Lam"

Samsung SGH-D520 With Bluetooth Stereo

Samsung SGH-D520 With Bluetooth Stereo: "Seems like we just told you about a Samsung slider yesterday, but here's another one today, the Samsung SGH-D520, whose main claim to fame is its support for Bluetooth stereo headsets. The bad news is its USB 1.1 interface and measly 80MB of storage, where it will take you a long time to transfer those 25 songs into it.

On the plus side, it has a 262K-color, 240x320 2.12-inch screen, and at a mere 8.9mm thick, it's small enough for the company to call it 'the card phone.' Looks nice, but to us, it's just another pretty face with not much underneath. "

Nokia's N73 and N93 launched

Nokia's N73 and N93 launched:

Well hello there N73 (bottom) and N93, how nice to see you in the for realz at last. Other than finally making these phones official we don't really have too much new information to offer. Both models run Series 60 3rd edition and feature large 2.4-inch QVGA, 262k color displays, Bluetooth 2.0, miniSD slot expansion, MP3/ACC media players, FM radio with Visual Radio, and a chubby 3.2 megapixel shooter with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, mechanical shutter, and integrated flash. Want to share those snaps? Coolio daddy-o, 'cause a new partnership with Flickr gives you the ability to upload and add comments to your photos directly from your new N-series cellphone without the need to download any additional software. The N73 will launch as both a quad-band GSM/EDGE model and another which includes 3G (2100MHz UMTS). It features 42MB of on-board memory and 3D stereo speakers at the top and bottom of the unit to kick out some tinny jams.

Nokia N72 launched

Nokia N72 launched:
Along with the N93 and N73, Nokia just launched their new N72 multimedia tri-band GSM/EDGE cellphone. This Symbian S60 handset features a 2.1-inch, 176 x 208, 262k color display, Bluetooth 2.0, and 20MB internal memory expandable via SD memory cards. Media support includes a digital music player with dedicated music keys supporting MP3 and AAC playback, an FM Radio with Visual Radio support, and throws in a swivel-activated 2 megapixel shooter with integrated flash capable of CIF video capture at 15fps. Nokia is positioning this pup as a 'multimedia computer' which is a bit of a stretch, but we'll play a long, for now. Expected in Pearl Pink or Gloss Black sometime in June 2006. More pics on the flip.

Japan to Get Blackberry, One More Thing to Obsess Over

Japan to Get Blackberry, One More Thing to Obsess Over: "Compared to most of the phones that Japan is currently using, the Blackberry is like giving stone tools to a technologically advanced race of super beings—it's a nice sentiment, but they'll probably prefer to stick with their warp drives and ninja holograms.

Anyway, DoCoMo may be working on a Japanese Blackberry interface and that the device should be available in 2006. That's assuming that the Email-Reading Robot Union doesn't go on strike when it begins perceiving these handheld as a threat to their way of life.

Moving newspapers to e-ink has already begun

Moving newspapers to e-ink has already begun: "Filed under: Handhelds

William Gibson was certainly right when he said 'The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet.' But not for long. The New York Times has a very interesting piece on newspapers going e-paper -- and we aren't talking Internet editions. Besides the obvious discussion of dynamic ads, how much e-papers will cost, and the when, where, and how, we're presented with something interesting: De Tijd, a Belgian financial newspaper, has already put their paper on iLiad e-ink eBook readers; Les Echos in Paris, the IFRA group in Germany, The New York Times, as well as the International Herald Tribune are all in discussions to roll out e-newspaper subscriptions for devices like Sony's Reader later this year. Sure, for now it's still in monochrome, but that won't be for long; besides, it was Earth Day this weekend, people, time to make some sacrifices. Think of the trees, won't you?

Sprint launches four new handsets, one oldie

Sprint launches four new handsets, one oldie: "Filed under: Handsets, LG, Sanyo, UTStarcom

Sprint's launched four new low end handsets today; they'll run you less than a Benjamin with contract, so don't expect much. Clockwise from left: the free Sprint CDM-120 (aka UTStarcom CDM-7025) has a 1.5-inch 65k color display, speakerphone, and MP3 ringtones; the Samsung SPH-A580 has a 128 x 160 65k color internal display, grayscale external display, voice dialing, 1xRTT data, and should run you thirty after contract; the Sanyo SCP-3100 features a 1.8-inch 65k color internal display, VGA camera, and carries a $50-spot price tag; the highest end of the bunch is the multi-colored LG LX350, with Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, 65k color external OLED display and 262k color internal screen, which should run you $80. Not pictured, like George Martin, is the UTStarcom PM-8920, an oldie from 2004 brought back from the dead with 1.3 megapixel camera, and 262k color displays in tow -- now twenty bucks with a contract.

Samsung's SCH-V890 slim slider

Samsung's SCH-V890 slim slider:

Samsung just knocked a couple more phone models outta bed to show-off their new SCH-V890/SPH-V8900 cellphone. This slider measures in at 13.8-mm and 85-grams and features a 2.12-inch, 240 x 320, 262K color TFT LCD, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel shooter, MP3 player and that Nate Drive service popular in South Korea. We're not sure, but we'll bet you can even hold it up real close to your pie-hole for making calls. At least it better for that roughly $525 US equiv."

Motorola Q sighted on Verizon.com

Motorola Q sighted on Verizon.com: "Filed under: Handsets, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Windows Mobile, EV-DO

It might not be much, but it's a good start. Quser.com just noticed this image of the Verizon version of the long-awaited Motorola Q floating around the Verizon website, and they thought they'd share. No more info than this, and we've known the Q was coming to Verizon for about forever, but at least the Verizon users among us can print out the image and play pretend.

Nokia 6175i Handset with GPS

Nokia 6175i Handset with GPS: "Nokia unveiled its 6175i CDMA handset, a midrange clamshell with a 1.3-megapixel camera as well as a GPS receiver. It's loaded for music, too, where you can listen to its built-in stereo FM radio or receive streaming audio or video in a variety of formats. Of course, it's Bluetooth compatible, and it has a 262K-color 128x160 internal display.

Although it looks a lot like most of the other Nokia handsets we've seen, that GPS receiver inside is a welcome feature. We're thinking this might be a ubiquitous feature in the months to come.

Treo launch rumor adds a price: $399 / $499

Treo launch rumor adds a price: $399 / $499: "
Last we heard from our insider in the biz, Palm was going to be launching their PalmOS-powered Treo 700p sometime around or on Monday, May 15th. Now it would seem Gadgets on the Go's gotten word from a source they deem reliable that the 700p's got a price: $399 for a new 2 year contract, $499 with a 1 year contract. (Oh, they also confirmed the same release time frame we had -- mid May ideally, early June at latest.) That sounds about right if you ask us, but there's only one way to find out: wait for the launch. Ok, well, two ways: we'll keep on inquiring, ourselves. Stay tuned, Treo nuts.
