Nokia 8800 Aston Martin Edition: only $1400

Nokia 8800 Aston Martin Edition: only $1400: "Filed under: Handsets, Nokia

When a mobile phone is on its last legs there are still a few things you can do -- bring out a pink or gold version, slap on some jewels, or align yourself with an automobile line that most closely aligns with your target consumer. Enter the Nokia 8800 Ford Aston Martin Edition which as these things go, will be produced in a 'strictly limited' quantity likely equalling the number of people willing to actually purchase one. So what do you get beyond what the 8800 fashion phone already dishes? Well, how about a discrete Aston Martin winged logo laser-etched on the stainless steel casing and an Aston Martin video, wallpaper, and screensaver all pre-loaded at the factory. Oh, and if that's not enough to convince you to dig deep for the £800 excluding VAT (more than $1400) required to get your man on, then how 'bout some custom ringtones which include samples of that roaring 380 horsepower Vantage V8. Vroom, vroom big daddy, vroom, vroom.

Virgin Mobile launches Switch_Back QWERTY phone

Virgin Mobile launches Switch_Back QWERTY phone: "

It might not be any more good looking now that it's finally being released to public consumption, but Virgin Mobile's new Switch_Back handset by Kyocera still seems to be a solid choice for QWERTY-inclined text messaging fiends. Along with the 'hidden' QWERTY keypad (it's called a clamshell, guys), the phone sports internal and external displays, and has a VGA camera. Otherwise there isn't much going on here. The handset will go for $150, and should be available in stores nationwide.

Yahoo!, RIM partner on Blackberry content

Yahoo!, RIM partner on Blackberry content:
RIM and Yahoo! have taken CTIA as occasion to formally announce their courtship, which will result in tighter integration of popular Yahoo! features such as email, IM, and search into the Blackberry operating system. Perhaps the biggest benefit to users from this partnership will be the ability to push Yahoo! email messages onto Blackberry devices, while maintaining a sync with the online mailbox, and delivering them to an interface that is already familiar. Furthermore, Messenger will receive enhanced features like emoticons, Yahoo! calendar and address book data is promised to be more accessible, and the Blackberry launcher will sport a button for opening the browser to a certain non-Google search engine. After the rollout of these initial services, Yahoo! and RIM will introduce a version of Yahoo! Go for Mobile, which will bring even more juicy search and information features to our favorite 'Berry (no offense, Chuck).

LG @ CTIA, the rest: LG225, LG350, LG3400, LG5300, LG8300

LG @ CTIA, the rest: LG225, LG350, LG3400, LG5300, LG8300:

LG brought a crush of new GSM and CDMA phones into CTIA in addition to the LG550 musicphone, LG DM-L200 for Disney we checked earlier. The LG8300 musicphone (pictured) is the most interesting of the lot bringing dual-stereo speakers and A2DP stereo Bluetooth to the game while packing a 1.3 megapixel cam, EV-DO data, a GPS positioning system, and stubby little antenna for jabbing into the sides of annoying commuters. The mid-level LG5300 packs in CDMA, dual-band GSM, Bluetooth and a VGA cam with flash. The LG3400 meanwhile, is touted as 'sleek, sexy and super lightweight' clamshell -- you be the judge. The LG350 then sports Bluetooth, dual internal/external LCD displays, and 3D graphics support. Bringing up the rear is the LG225 which sports a range of uninspiring features such as VGA cam, full-duplex speakerphone, and MSN Messenger for those mad texting tweeners in your life. Pics of the others after the break.

Jitterbug fills the void for geriatric MVNO

Jitterbug fills the void for geriatric MVNO: "

With all those MVNOs cropping up for the youthful crowd, it's about time the seniors got one of their own. The new Jitterbug MVNO will feature a special Jitterbug phone from Samsung with oversized keys, a large display text, and loud audio. There will be a second version that sounds similar to the firefly offerings for children, featuring only three main buttons: one to a Jitterbug operator to help make a call, one for 911, and one to call a dedicated number like that of a relative or perhaps the Home Shopping Network. The new MVNO is powered by Sprint, but sounds to be one of the last for a while since the carrier claims it's not going to be adding many more new MVNOs, and is currently taking a break to get their current MVNOs figured and see how well they do. We'll be sad to see these heady days go of four new MVNOs a minute, but perhaps it's for the best.
